UA South : History
History
History, as a discipline, is rooted in the empirical study of particular people, areas, and periods. It draws upon concepts and theories from the social sciences and humanities to illuminate the varieties of the human experience and thus provide unique perspectives on our present. History majors at the University of Arizona South explore patterns and processes of change and continuity, around the world and across time, in an effort to demonstrate how diverse societies and cultures have confronted challenges common to the human experience.
The history major at UA South provides practical training in historical research and promotes skills in writing and critical analysis that are the foundation of contemporary liberal arts education. The UA South History program will prepare you for many careers as it emphasizes analytical skills, reading comprehension, and writing proficiency. The major also provides the marketable skills of the historian as it will train you to collect, organize, and evaluate evidence with the goal of effectively presenting your original conclusions concerning subject studies. History majors enter all walks of life, many choosing careers that include law, teaching, journalism, the government and non-profit organizations (to name only a few).
