Family Studies and Human Development

Bachelor of Science

The B.S. degree in Family Studies and Human Development prepares students for a number of career tracks and future graduate work. Many of our students use their bachelor's degree to work in the human services field which is always seeking new professionals. Other students continue into master's degree programs in social work or counseling. With a Bachelor of Science degree in Family Studies and Human Development from the University of Arizona South, our students have developed careers working with children and families in social agencies, law enforcement, and private foundations. Students use the knowledge of human development, relationships, family dynamics, and social issues to build long term careers in the field and for personal growth. This program prepares students to work in such areas as teaching parenting skills, working with children and adolescents, helping women and children involved with domestic violence, working in corrections, child protection, or protection of the aged. The human services field is wide open and will only grow as our population continues to grow and age.

The Family Studies and Human Development Program at the University of Arizona South provides small classes with individualized attention to each student, opportunities to use your critical thinking skills in the discussions, support from your Program Coordinator and Faculty Advisor, and access to community service opportunities through the Community Service Association of UA South. This program and the association allow students opportunities to be of service in the community while building their resumes and making future career contacts in their chosen field. For students who want to make a difference in their communities and families, the Family Studies and Human Development Program is a perfect fit.

The program is designed to be completed in 4 semesters of coursework following the completion of an AGEC (Arizona General Education Curriculum) at your local community college. The program delivers quality education with convenience through the use of web delivered core coursework. The core courses are asynchronous allowing students to complete their work in a timely manner while having the flexibility to do their studies around work and family schedules. Students learn a variety of skills related to working with families and children in either agency or private settings. These include knowledge of human development across the lifespan, family systems theory, basic counseling, analysis, program planning, and advanced problems in development.
