The English Program at the University of Arizona South offers instruction in language and literature, leading to the following degrees: Bachelor of Arts with a major in English, Bachelor of Arts in Education with teaching majors in English and extended English, and minors in English, Creative Writing, and English Education.

Courses are offered in a number of topics which will allow the undergraduate to experience a wide variety of approaches to literary texts, develop writing skills and appreciate the nature of language. In addition to courses in the traditional fields of English and American literature and composition and creative writing, the department offers courses in such areas as folklore, American Indian studies, and environmental literature. Undergraduate majors in English can expect to attain reading, writing and analytical skills which will allow them to pursue careers in professional graduate studies in literature, or in business, law, medicine and a number of fields of endeavor which demand these skills.

Additional Information:

The English major requires 36 units of coursework. At least 30 of these units must be upper division (300- and 400-level) English courses.

The 15 unit “core” requires: ENGV 306, 380, 396a, Shakespeare (310 at UA South), and 496a.

In addition, six units of upper division literature courses are required. Take two of the following courses or see your advisor for additional options:
Cochise County 371a, 371b, 472, and 486 or Pima County 370a, 370b, 472, and 486.

English majors must also complete three units of language and three units of underrepresented literature. At UA South ENGV 417a fulfills the language requirement. A course that fulfills the underrepresented literature requirement will be offered at least once every fourth semester (Spring 2008 in Pima, Spring 2009 in Cochise). See your advisor for additional course options.

The remaining 3 upper-division units are electives that can be selected from any of the following courses: 308, 370a, 370b, 371a, 371b, 419a, 419b, 424, 449, 472, 477, or 486

The Minor in English

Students may earn a minor in English by taking a minimum of 21 units (18 for students combining a major in Social and Behavioral Sciences with the minor in English) which must include 9 units of upper-division course work including ENGV 380.

The Minor in Creative Writing

[Currently available only at the Sierra Vista Campus.]
Students may earn a minor in Creative Writing (“Fiction Concentration”) by taking 21 units. Required core courses include 304, 404, and 380. Two 400-level courses in modern or contemporary literature are also required. ENGV 472 will fulfill this requirement and, depending on course content, 486 and 404 may also work too—students must check with their advisor to be certain. Finally, students must take one additional literature course and one additional writing course as electives. See your advisor for specific options.

Students need at least 120 units to graduate; a minimum of 42 units must be upper-division. A maximum of 64 units of community college course work can be applied to University degree programs.
